Deeyar Television Launches in Virginia, Aims to Provide Independent Coverage of Afghanistan Amid Media Crackdown

November 15, 2024

Virginia, USA – Deeyar Television, a recently launched media outlet by Afghan journalists in exile, officially began broadcasting today in Virginia, USA, with a mission to deliver thorough and independent coverage of key developments in Afghanistan amidst ongoing restrictions on media freedom.

In a statement to the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC), Deeyar TV emphasized its commitment to delivering timely and accurate news. "We are dedicated to operating transparently, honestly, and impartially. The right to understand both the visible and concealed aspects of global events is a fundamental entitlement of the people," the statement read.

Yaser Abrar, founder and CEO of Deeyar TV, shared that the station was founded seven months ago and had been operating on a trial basis. "Our mission is to reflect political and social dynamics in Afghanistan with a focus on more free and impartial coverage," he stated.

Currently, Deeyar TV employs a team of 15 journalists and is distributing its content online through its website and social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Telegram. Programming is available in Persian and Pashto, with English-language sections set to launch shortly.

Abrar announced that video broadcasting will begin in two weeks, followed by plans to initiate satellite broadcasts within the next six months.

Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, Afghanistan has witnessed a significant decline in media freedom, with many outlets shutting down due to escalating restrictions and economic challenges. This has driven hundreds of journalists and media workers to seek refuge primarily in Western countries. In response to these challenges, a number of online newspapers and TV channels have been established by exiled Afghan journalists, aimed at providing critical reporting on the situation in Afghanistan.

AFJC welcomes the launch of Deeyar TV and views the establishment of independent media outlets outside of Afghanistan as a vital development in light of intensified censorship and restricted access to information under Taliban rule. AFJC hopes that these new media outlets will foster independent, professional journalism that upholds the principles of accurate and ethical reporting.
