Noorin TV’s presenter case sent to AG

Kabul, 02 May 2012

Media Violations and Complaints Assessment Commission (MVCAC) announced sending the “media violation” case of non-government Noorin television’s presenter, Nastoh Nadery to the Attorney General’s office.

Mr. Nadery, the presenter of Noorin TV’s controversial program of “Sarzamin-e Man” (My homeland) was called by the Attorney General’s office on Saturday, April 21, 2012 and has been kept in detention since.

Wahidullah Gharwal, one member of MVCAC told Pajhwok that the presenter had accused the Kabul Municipality and the Afghan Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation of corruption.

According to Mr. Gharwal, both Kabul Municipality and the Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation had filed complaints against Mr. Nadery to this commission.

Mr. Gharwal said, “All MVCAC members collectively considered Mr. Nadery’s action to be against the country’s media law, and an obvious violation it. The commission sent his case to Attorney General Office for further processing.”

According to this MVCAC member, in line with the law Mr. Nadery must prove his claims against Kabul Municipality and the Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation in the courthouse.

However, Mr. Nadery’s bosses and colleagues have said that Mr. Nadery was called by the AG’s office after he had a controversial interview with Kabul mayor, Younus Nowandesh.

News manager of Noorin TV, Hameedullah Noorzaad said that Mr. Nadery was arrested illegally prior to proving any allegations against him.

He confirmed airing a critical report about Kabul Municipality in one of “Sarzamin-e Man” series that was presented by Nastow Nadery, but refused having any program about Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation in their channel.

This is not the first time Mr. Nadery has been arrested. Following the airing of a controversial program about members of parliament, Mr. Nadery was arrested by Kabul police on a Wednesday, December 16, 2009.
