Press TV cameraman comes under acid attack in Kabul

Kabul, Feb. 12. 2012

Afghanistan Journalists Center (AfJC) strongly condemns the acid attack on TV press cameraman, Parwiz Safi. The AfJC appeals from the Afghan government to take serious action against doers of such rigorous acts.

Parwiz Safi was on his way to work to Press TV office in Deh Sabz area on Monday when he came under attack.

Press TV manager, Mohammad Rohi, said that Mr. Safi’s face was seriously hurt and he was taken to hospital for treatment. Mr. Rohi refused to provide further details.

Last year, Razaq Mamoon, the editor in chief of Bust-e Bastan news agency came under similar acid attack that critically injured his face.

Afghanistan is considered a dangerous place for media activities. In addition to facing physical violence, threats and imprisonment, in the last ten years a total of 31 reporters and media activists have been killed in Afghanistan.

In one of these incidents that took place on Sept. 13. 2011, another Press TV cameraman Mr. Farhad Taqadosi got injured by a rocket attack while he was working in the office. He later died of those sever injuries.

The rocket propelled accidentally hit Press TV office when the Taliban assaulted the ISAF and the US embassy in Kabul.
