Kabul — The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) condemns the recent actions taken by the Taliban intelligence authorities in shutting down Shamshad Radio and Television in Kabul. This measure constitutes a blatant interference in the independence of a free media and undermines the fundamental principles of press freedom.
According to credible sources in Kabul, the suspension of Shamshad Radio and Television’s broadcasts was carried out following a direct order from the Taliban de facto General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) on Friday evening, October 17. The de facto authorities have not publicly responded to the news; however, the station has reportedly been accused by affiliated social media accounts of failing to adequately cover recent security operations between Taliban security forces and Pakistani military forces, as well as Pakistan's attacks on Afghanistan. Additionally, it is alleged that the station did not present the Taliban government’s stance and its actions against Pakistan.
To date, the Shamshad Radio and Television has not issued any public statement regarding this matter. Shamshad is an independent media outlet established in 2006, and as a private organization, it has played a vital role in providing diverse perspectives to the Afghan public.
AFJC firmly condemns the action taken by the de facto authorities to shutter Shamshad Radio and Television. Such measures represent an explicit violation of media independence and freedom of expression. It is essential that media outlets operate based on professional journalistic standards and are only subject to legal accountability in cases of misconduct.
According to Afghanistan’s Media Law, no individual or entity—including government bodies—has the right to prohibit, restrict, censor, or otherwise interfere with the lawful operation of independent media outlets and their dissemination of information.
AFJC urges the Taliban de facto authorities to reconsider their decision and to promptly allow Shamshad Radio and Television to resume its operations as a free and independent media entity. The authorities must cease threats and punitive measures against independent media and instead foster an open environment free from fear, where all voices in society can be heard without intimidation or suppression.
