Faizabad, Badakhshan — The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) strongly condemns the detention of Nazim Qasimy, a reporter for Tolo News TV, by Taliban intelligence officials in Badakhshan province. The organization calls for his immediate and unconditional release.
According to an informed source in Badakhshan, Nazim Qasimy was detained around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at his home in the provincial capital, Faizabad. De facto authorities in Badakhshan have not provided any official comment regarding the reasons for his detention. However, a local source indicated that Qasimy’s detention may be linked to a recent critical Facebook post, in which he strongly condemned the Taliban forces’ treatment of residents in Badakhshan.
AFJC condemns this action and urges the Taliban to release Qasimy without delay. The organization also calls for the release of other journalists and media workers currently detained or imprisoned.
Furthermore, AFJC urges the Taliban government to respect journalists’ right to report the truth and to cease promoting a single-voice propaganda policy that undermines press freedom. Journalists must be able to exercise their right to freedom of expression without fear of arrest or threats. Currently, at least four media professionals are in detention or serving sentences in prison.
