Ezatullah Zawab told the AFJC that he was detained on January 24, 2024, while traveling from Kabul to the eastern city of Jalalabad. He was accused of carrying and using alcohol and drugs. Zawab stated that he was released from prison on May 21, after 117 days of detention, when a court in Kabul found him not guilty of the charges against him. Previously, in 2002, he had been summoned and interrogated by the GDI for writing and publishing a poem on his Facebook page that criticized the Taliban's ban on girls' higher education. At that time, he was compelled to remove the poem from his page.
