 KABUL, 21 January, 2011

The Center to Support Journalists of Afghanistan commends the Kabul police for arresting a suspect of acid attack on Razzaq Mamon, a senior Afghan journalist.

The center also asks the government of Afghanistan to comprehensively look into the attack and reasons behind it.

According to Muhammad Zahir, chief of the crime investigation unit of the Kabul police, the suspect was arrested on Friday in a Kabul outskirt and he has confessed to throwing acid at Mamon’s face and body.

Mamoon was attacked with acid Tuesday night as he left home in Macro Ryan neighborhood of the capital. He is hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Mamoon, currently director of Bost Bastan news agency who has also worked for the BBC, Radio Liberty and Tolo TV, has accused Iran of being behind the attack.

His most recent book, Rad-i-Pai-Firaaon, (Footprint of Pharaoh), is mainly about the role of Iran in Afghanistan's civil war.
